A Statement Piece Deserved a Crown

After finishing my reversible Ikea jacket, I realized something — it’s such a statement piece that most of my wardrobe struggled to keep up. I loved wearing it, but finding something to pair underneath felt like a styling puzzle every time. That’s when I decided to make a matching headband. Something simple, bold, and versatile enough to pull any outfit into the world of that jacket.

So in May 2025, a few months after the jacket’s debut, I finally made it.

Beading to the Beat of the Fabric

Like with my Czech heirloom headband, I added batting inside to give it extra height and that regal, crown-like feel. But this time, instead of mapping out a new bead pattern, I let the fabric guide me. I hand-embroidered red tunnel beads, pink and red seed beads, and hints of gold, following the natural curves and shapes already woven into the textile.

It was slow work — needle in, needle out — but surprisingly meditative. Beading along the fabric’s story felt like having a conversation with it, adding just enough shimmer without stealing the spotlight from the jacket’s rich metallic florals.

Building a Family of Handmade Pieces

What I love most about this headband isn’t just how it pairs with the jacket — it’s how it feels like it belongs to a growing little family of garments I’ve made. Like my Czech Heirloom Headband and Duvet Pants, both cut from the same thrifted fabric, each piece holds a different chapter of my story but still speaks to the others.

And I’m already dreaming up something for the extra fabric from my Chinese-inspired headband. These aren’t just accessories or clothes anymore — they’re keepsakes. Each one connected, carrying the marks of my hands, my heritage, and the moments that made them.

This headband isn’t just an outfit finisher. It’s another thread in a tapestry I’m slowly weaving together.
